Title: A quote by Francois-Andre Danican Philidor
Summary: Gerard punches Stiles, Peter saves Stiles, and Stiles has no idea what's going on.

Les Pions sont l’âme des Echecs
(Pawns are the Soul of Chess)

Gerard has Stiles on the ground, trying to punch out information and getting nothing but blood on his knuckles, when Peter shows up “I wouldn’t do that if I were you and wanted to keep my throat intact.  And let me tell you, having your throat slashed open?  Not fun.”

Gerard looks up, still crouched over Stiles.  To his credit he doesn’t glance around for reinforcements.  “What do you want?”  As if to say, Kate’s dead; it’s my turn on the revenge train.

“I’m just here for the boy.”

Summary: Stiles asks Derek for the bite.

Live with Wolves, and You Learn to Howl
Last night I dreamed that I was chasing a pack of wolves, trying to belong. - Anon. or uncredited.
Derek turned away from the teen with a sigh, leaving the door open behind him.

“What now, Stiles?”

“I’m in.”

Derek glanced back at Stiles standing in what was left of his foyer, hands deep in his pockets.  Was this some sort of joke?  Derek gave a little no shit tilt of his head.

“I’m in,” repeated Stiles, adding a defiant jut to his chin.

Okay, I’ll bite. ”In what?”

“Your little leather wolf pack.”

Link By Link

Derek stood staring at the door as it swung shut behind Stiles.  He heard the boy’s steps fall sure and steady as he went down the front steps, then muffle as he reached packed earth.  They paused.  The barest wisp of air rushing in past clenched teeth reached Derek’s ears, then silence.  A few seconds later, there was a forceful sigh tinged with an emotion Derek couldn’t read.

Summary: Sheriff Stilinski waits up for his son.

Where's the Fire?

I’m not upset that you lied to me, I’m upset that from now on I can’t believe you. - Friedrich Nietzsche

Sheriff Stilinski sank down onto the couch with a sigh.  He could almost feel the years settling on him like a heavy blanket, joints registering their complaint at having been put through overtime yet again.  It was late and the house was empty.  It often was, these days.

Stilinski popped a beer can open and balanced it on his knee, waiting for Stiles to come home, wondering what mayhem his son was up to.  The kid was running around like a headless chicken more often than not.  Sure he’d spout some line about study groups or midnight showings, but no teenage boy runs to those like he’s trying to put out a fire. Summary: Stiles finally makes it home after the events of the season two finale.

Long Day (Longer Night)

However long the night, the dawn will break. - Proverb

Stiles can barely keep his eyes open on the way home, even though his heart is pounding in his chest like it thinks he’s still running for his life and his hands are claws on the steering wheel, squeezing so tight his joints ache, and can we not think about claws please?

Summary: Stiles is getting ready for something he can't cope with just yet.

Linear Equations

Stiles thinks about lines.

He thinks about how they go on forever, how Euclid said they had breadthless length and how the first time Stiles read that, his eyes flicked over the page so fast that he thought he’d read breathless instead.

He tries not to think about breathlessness.

He thinks about how lines are everywhere, in the walls of his house, the lay of the town.  They’re on faces, laugh lines and worry lines and all manner of other lines that bring life to familiar faces.  They’re even etched on the skin of his palm.  Life lines, and isn’t that a laugh.

No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear. ― C.S. Lewis, A Grief Observed

Stiles was starting to scare Scott. Like, really scare him.

Note: Title from “I’ve Been Out Walking” by Jackson Browne

I’ve Been Out Walking (I Don’t Do Too Much Talking)

...the woods are the only place I can see a clear path. - Captain Malcolm Reynolds, Firefly “Serenity” (1x01-02)

The first time Derek caught wind of Stiles, the moon was in its first quarter.  The air was autumn crisp, blowing in on a soft breeze from across the ravine.  On nights like these, sounds and scents carried well. On other nights, hot still ones, all he would catch were the strong notes, whereas on wets ones, everything came to him muted and wrapped in the scent of earth.  On nights like these, though, the ripples traveling across the world reached Derek whole, full of nuances and sharp edges.Read more... )
